Day 2 of Writers in Paradise

Day 2 of the 2018 Writers in Paradise conference at Eckerd College in beautiful St Petersburg, Florida.

#WritersInParadise #EckerdCollege #WritingConference

After introduction of the faculty, the Key Note speaker, Ana Menendez,

Ana offered several writing exercises focused at the difference between logical writing and emotional writing.

She quoted several authors, including Papa Hemingway’s famous “Write Drunk, Edit Sober”

and I took away the sense that one should write with the heart, without regard for logic or structure,

and the rewrite/edit/rewire/fine tune/rewrite with logic and structure in mind.

One interesting exercise was to write for six minutes as fast as possible without thought, well, much thought.

This showed the emotional side of writing.

Another exercise was to rewrite a provided poem using NO WORDS that contained the letter ‘E’, maintaining as much as possible the story line of the poem.

This emphasized the logical side of rewriting.

A third exercise included writing my own horoscope/zodiac without the letter ‘E’.

This required me to be creative (emotional) in writing the piece while at the very same time being logical and using no words that contained the letter “E’

After lunch, the faculty and attendees adjourned to their respective classrooms for the first in the series of focused workshops intended to improve writing skills.

In my group, we had introductions, housekeeping, ground rules and then discussed the first novel.

Wine & Cheese reception was offered followed by Evening Reading from Stewart O’Nan & Laura McCaffrey.

Writers in Paradise opening ceremonies.

Well, what an exciting start to the 2018 Writers in Paradise conference at Eckerd College in beautiful St Petersburg, Florida.

After some mundane housekeeping (registration, campus tour, etc), a wonderful Wine & Cheese reception was offered

followed by the Keynote Speaker (Ana Menendez) who spoke about writing and read from her latest manuscript.

Marina Pruna offered Introductions and the event was followed by onstage Q&A with Les Standiford and Ana Menendez .

Afterwards, we adjourned to the Triton Pub for a fabulous Welcome Reception.

Angela Hunt Speaks on Writing Characters

Last night, The Tampa Writers Alliance hosted Christy-Award winner Angela Hunt.

With nearly five million copies of her books sold worldwide, she is the best-selling author of more than 140 works ranging from picture books (The Tale of Three Trees) to non-fiction books, to novels.

Ms Hunt spoke about the craft of Writing Characters. She gave insights on creating characters using the Myers Briggs personality test to create a well rounded personality. She then spoke about POV, and the importance of staying in one characters head throughout a scene. She also touched on genres, third-person vs. first-person, and the difference formulas for each genre.

We were able to coax her into relating her own personal story of becoming a writer.

Angela Hunt often speaks and teaches at major writer’s conferences and she participates as a founding instructor in the Glen Eyrie Writer’s Summit.

Book Signing – William Valentine’s “Cuban Charade”

Yesterday, Haslam Books hosted a book signing by author William Valentine and his latest novel Cuban Charade.

“Seth Stone and the ‘Geezers’ spring into action when an old fishing buddy is wrongly imprisoned in Cuba. They cut short a sail fishing trip in Key West and slip into Cuba using their own boats and ingenuity to try and right that wrong. Old friends in high places supply off the record Intel and weapons to these resourceful old codgers. Cuban Charade provides a rare look behind the facade of “Old Havana” and the Hemingway mystique and bares the harsh realities of communist Cuba. The author’s wry wit and the non-stop, multiple plot action makes this novel hard to put down. Great fiction and faction by an author that has been there.”

Bill is the independently published author of Salt Creek Justice, Caicos Conspiracy and Costa Rican Reprise. Bill is retired dock master and an avid boater having many adventures sailing the Caribbean.

An Evening With Ben Montgomery

Last night, 11/13/17, KeepStPeteLit and Friends of the Library hosted journalist and author Ben Montgomery

and one woman with leprosy who aided the fight for freedom.
