Today I had a delightful conversation with New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Shirley Jump.
Shirley has written and traditionally published over 60 romance novels.
In addition to raising two kids and working full time jobs, Shirley writes six delicious novels each year.
She has won numerous awards, including the HOLT Medallion, the Booksellers Best Award and Colorado Romance Writers Award of Excellence. She’s been nominated multiple times for the Romantic Times ‘Reviewer’s Choice’ award.
Shirley offered this advice to me, personally, on my quest to traditional publication.
- Make sure to nail down your genre.
- Find published books that are similar to mine by well known authors.
- Find an agent who specializes in that genre.
- Before going to Writers in Paradise, (Jan 2018) research the agents who will be attending to determine which might be interested in my novel.
Shirley is the ex-wife of a friend of mine and was gracious enough to take time from her very, very busy life to offer guidance and encouragement to a fledgling writer.
Thanks, Ms Jump!
